Background

What are the two types of epigenetic and how does it work?

Methylation

DNA Methylation is when the epigenetic mechanism, a methyl group(CH3) is added to DNA and changes the function of the gene[B1]occurs on the cytosine nucleotide of the DNA sequence. B2

Histones

Acetylation is a type of histone modifications that activates the gene. During this process an acetyl group(COCH3)his added to lysine amino acids (positively charged) in the histone tail by histone acetyltransferases which causes the gene to activate by loosening the chromatin. B2

Deacetylation is a type of histone modification that acts the opposite of a acetylation. The acetyl group is removed from the DNA by histone deacetylases to disclose the positive charge. Thus, the chromatins will tighten, causing the gene to be repressed. B2
